CBD and OCD, Houston

Research on possible benefits of CBD and OCD by OilWell CBD of Houston, TX

Cannabinol, or CBD, may be beneficial for those suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder, also known as OCD. OCD is a disorder with symptoms that include compulsive behavior, agitation, social isolation, compulsive hoarding, repetitive words or actions (often in the form of ritualistic behavior), with overwhelming feelings of anxiety, fear, and depression. Approximately 1 in 40 adults and 1 in 100 children have OCD. OCD was not classified as an anxiety disorder in the DSM-5, however excessive anxiety is fundamental to its symptomatology.

How might full-spectrum CBD help alleviate the symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder?

CBD has recently been used in clinical studies as a possible treatment for OCD. Current treatments for OCD often have moderate to severe side effects, with limited success. Because CBD has well documented anxiolytic properties and a low occurrence of side effects, it has recently been studied as a possible treatment for several anxiety-related disorders, including OCD, PTSD, generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder.

Clinical studies have been performed on a wide range of animals, showing promise in reducing stress-induced increases in heart rate and blood pressure, which can be caused by anxiety or panic. It should be noted that in at least one study, the effectiveness of CBD had a bell-shaped response curve, suggesting it is not more effective at higher doses, but instead may work better if taken regularly at a moderate dose.

What are the symptoms of OCD?

  • Intrusive, obsessive thoughts, some of which may be violent or sexual in nature.
  • Checking (and re-checking) over and over, such as going home to check to make sure you’ve locked your door.
  • Fear of contamination, whether it be germs or drugs or sickness.
  • Repetition, such as repeating words or having to touch something a certain number of times before picking it up.
  • Obsessively arranging and rearranging items until they are ‘just right.’
  • Excessive anxiety if rituals or checking is not performed.

What causes Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?

Although the cause of OCD is not completely understood, it is theorized that the development of OCD could be caused by:

  • Hereditary or genetic factors
  • Chemical imbalances in the brain
  • Learned behavior, where repetition or rituals relieve anxiety
  • Changes in hormones
  • Underlying anxiety disorder
  • Trouble processing traumatic events

Is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Dangerous?

While the disorder itself does not pose any danger, individuals afflicted with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder may perform actions triggered by the disorder that is harmful to themselves or others. For example, a person suffering from OCD may develop an irrational fear that their food is contaminated and stop eating or drinking. Others with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder feel so trapped by their anxiety and rituals that their quality of life becomes affected and suicidal thoughts can occur.
