Delta-9 THC in Houston, Texas:  Hemp-Derived and Farm Bill Compliant

Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis and the primary motivation behind the recreational use of various forms of hemp-derived Farm Bill Compliant Cannabis. While people have enjoyed the blissful effects of Delta-9 for thousands of years, it’s not legal in high concentrations on the federal level.  Luckily, Delta-9 THC products are available as long as they have under 0.3%.  This makes it available for people in “non-legal” locations such as Houston, Texas!

The motivation for using THC is to achieve a high, though Delta-9 has many benefits beyond euphoria, especially when paired with cannabidiol (CBD).

What is Delta-9 THC?

Delta-9 THC is a cannabinoid molecule found in cannabis and the source of its psychoactive effects, or the source of the “high” that people experience when using traditionally associated forms of Cannabis and an advantage of high-THC strains for recreational use.

The Cannabis sativa plant is divided into hemp and traditionally associated forms of Cannabis. Delta-9 THC is present in both, but in higher concentrations in traditionally associated forms of Cannabis. Hemp is federally legal according to the Agriculture and Nutrition Act of 2018, which classifies hemp (0.3 percent Delta-9 THC or less) as a federally legal substance and marijuana as a schedule 1 controlled substance. Federal and state laws vary, but hemp-derived products are legal on both federal and state levels.

THC is one of over 400 active substances in traditionally associated forms of Cannabis, though it’s among the most recognized. This substance attaches to the cannabinoid receptors in the body and stimulates them. The euphoric effect only lasts a few hours, but THC is detectable in the body for up to 20 hours and may be stored in body fat and organs for weeks. Hair tests can detect THC for up to 90 days.

The most common way of using THC is smoking traditionally associated forms of Cannabis, but it can also be consumed through vaping, oral ingestion using capsules, tinctures, oils, or edibles, topically through balms, lotions, salts, or salves, and sublingually through strips, sprays, or lozenges.

Effects of THC

THC stimulates the neurotransmitter dopamine, which leads to the feeling of euphoria. Each person experiences the high of THC differently, but it may include feelings of heightened senses, relaxation, hunger, and altered perception of time.

Some people experience unpleasant side effects like anxiety, memory loss, delusions, or hallucinations. Confusion, restlessness, excitability, issues with memory recall, and other symptoms may also occur. Depending on the unique makeup of the person, these symptoms can be intense, leading to an increase in cortisol production, while others enjoy the euphoric feeling and aren’t as sensitive to these effects.

Delta-9 for Mental Health Ailments

Neurodegenerative Diseases

Research into the effects of phytocannabinoids suggests that THC has neuroprotective properties that can inhibit the neuronal death common to neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s.

Based on animal and human studies, phytocannabinoids like CBD and THC may have anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and immunomodulatory benefits that are valuable as a supplemental treatment for neurodegenerative clinical syndromes.

Anxiety

Traditionally associated forms of Cannabis, are often used to cope with anxiety, especially in people with a social anxiety disorder. Research shows that THC may decrease anxiety at lower doses and increase anxiety at higher doses, but CBD decreases anxiety at all doses. This is likely due to the relaxing effect of using traditionally associated forms of Cannabis and the effects of CBD on the endocannabinoid system.

Depression

Current research connects the co-occurrence of cannabis use and depression. Some studies suggest that the use of cannabis can contribute to the onset of depression, while other studies indicate that depression may contribute to the use of cannabis. More research is needed to determine the long-term effect of cannabis use and the outcome of depression, especially in people with a predisposition to major depression.

Eating Disorders

The endocannabinoid system is important for food intake and energy expenditure, making it a potential route for managing eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating. Studies suggest that cannabinoids may be effective for treating eating disorders.

Currently, combinations of THC and CBD are effective in addressing the anorexia and wasting that occurs with cancer patients undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. Early research into THC suggest that it can improve weight gain, eating patterns, and the depression associated with body dysmorphic disorders.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects millions of people, including veterans of the armed forces, prompting investigation into the potential therapeutic effects of smoked cannabis in treating it.

In the first FDA-regulated study of its kind, people with PTSD were given mixtures of THC and CBD at different concentrations to determine its efficacy. The cannabis users reported a decrease in the severity of their PTSD symptoms, and some no longer met the diagnostic criteria for PTSD as a result.

Insomnia and Sleep Disorders

Some cannabis strains are touted for their relaxation and sedative effects, which may make them a good option for treating insomnia. Preliminary research into cannabis and insomnia suggests that CBD may have therapeutic potential on its own, and Delta-9 can decrease sleep latency, or the time it takes to fall asleep. That said, studies indicate that Delta-9 can impair sleep quality in the long term.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

New research into the effects of cannabis on obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) showed that it may help relieve the symptoms of OCD and OCD-like conditions. In the study, OCD patients were given varied concentrations of THC and CBD, both of which act on the endocannabinoid symptoms. The results indicate that both THC and CBD may be useful in reducing the frequency or severity of OCD behaviors.

Autism-Spectrum Disorder

Autism-spectrum disorder may include symptoms like sleep disturbances, anxiety, aggression, depression, hyperactivity, and psychomotor agitation. Some studies show that cannabis products can reduce the frequency or intensity of these symptoms and improve cognition, sensory sensitivity, social interactions, and attentiveness.

Delta-9 for Physical Ailments

Cancer

Traditionally associated forms of Cannabis has long been used to relieve the side effects of cancer and cancer therapies like radiation and chemotherapy. Studies of the cannabinoids in cannabis, including THC and CBD, show that these substances may be helpful in treating nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy and treating neuropathic pain from damaged nerves.

Chronic Pain

Cannabis has been used to treat chronic pain for millennia, though there’s limited research into its efficacy. Patients with osteoarthritis often use medical cannabis to manage symptoms, and anecdotal evidence supports the analgesic effects of cannabinoids for chronic pain.

Other studies indicate that the analgesic effects are tied to the concentration of THC, which means that patients may need significant euphoria with side effects to manage pain effectively. People suffering from chronic pain may be able to experiment with low doses of THC to find the therapeutic threshold, or “sweet spot” before it reaches euphoria.

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a seizure disorder characterized by disturbances in nerve cell activity. Epileptic seizures trigger the synthesis and release of 2-arachidonoylglycerol, or 2-AF, which can reduce seizure intensity.

Studies suggest that THC mimics the synthesis of 2-AG, but may lead to post-seizure oxygen deprivation in the brain. When 2-AG is broken down, it triggers a cascade of biochemical reactions that lead to blood-vessel constriction and possible disorientation or memory loss.

Delta-8 and Delta-9: What’s the Difference and Which One is Best for Me?

Delta-8 and Delta-9 are both THC and occur naturally in the cannabis plant, though in different concentrations. They both activate the same receptors as well, but Delta-9 has much stronger euphoric effects that may be desirable for some and unpleasant for others.

Delta-9 has been around for years, so there’s a lot more research into its effects, therapeutic benefits, and adverse reactions. While there’s less research on Delta-8 at this point, it’s legal on the federal level and gaining in popularity. It’s legal in most states, but some have banned or regulated its use, including Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Kentucky, Idaho, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, New York, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Michigan, North Dakota, and Connecticut.

As far as efficacy, research suggests that Delta-8 THC may be equally effective for therapeutic and recreational cannabis purposes with fewer adverse effects, such as anxiety and paranoia, but more research is needed.

Delta-8 may be the better choice for people sensitive to the effects of THC or trying it for the first time. It’s important to begin with the lowest possible dose and increase gradually to gain the maximum benefits with minimal side effects, regardless of which version you use. Many factors can impact the euphoria and side effects of THC, including medications, genetics, age, gender, and your unique enzymes.

Another thing to consider is that Delta-8 is not listed as a controlled substance and is unregulated, so its safety and concentration depend on the supplier. Whether you choose Delta-8 or Delta-9, it’s important to choose high-quality products from suppliers with ethics and transparency.

That’s why at OilWell CBD, we strive to produce the highest-quality, small-batch creations with fully Farm-Bill-compliant cannabinoids. Exceptional attention to detail goes into every finished product, with full transparency, so you can trust the products you get from us.

It’s also important to stay current on the legal status of Delta-8 and Delta-9 in your state. Some states have specific rules regarding how much of a substance you can have on your person, the concentration of THC, and what quantities you can buy.

We’re always keeping up with the evolving legality of cannabinoids and their uses to ensure we can provide the products our customers need.
